How to draft an invitation letter

When you are drafting an invitation letter, you will want to make sure that the following information is included in the letter

  1. The other person’s full legal name - The name should match any government ID that will be used with the application.

  2. The other person’s date of birth

  3. The other person’s current foreign address - The address should match any government ID that will be used with the application

  4. A brief explanation of your relationship with the other person

  5. The purpose of the other person’s trip to Canada

  6. The length of the other person’s trip to Canada

  7. The location and address of where the person will stay - You should explain whether the person will stay in a hotel, private residence, university dorm, and the applicable address

  8. A brief explanation of how the other person will pay for their expenses while in Canada - This explanation can be simple, you do not need to give a full financial accounting for the other person, however specific details are helpful

  9. The date that the other person intends on leaving Canada

  10. Your complete legal name - This should match your government ID

  11. Your date of birth

  12. Your address

  13. Your telephone number - We also recommend including a valid email address

  14. Information about your employment - Include your employer’s business name, the business address, and your position or job title with the business

  15. Information about your immediate family including full legal names and dates of birth for any partners or children

  16. Your immigration status - Include whether you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  17. A photo copy of a document proving your immigration status - This can be a Canadian issued birth certificate, a Canadian citizenship card, a Permanent Resident card, a IMM 1000 form showing proof of landing, Indian Status card. We recommend including a notarized copy of this document

If your invitation letter is for a super visa (for a parent and grandparent) you must include these additional details

  1. A promise of financial support for the duration of the visit

  2. The number of people in your family and the names of those individuals - This is so that the government can ensure that you, as a host, have the minimum amount of income to financially support the visitor

  3. Previously sponsored individuals

  4. Previously approved super visa applicants

Once you have written the invitation letter, you will need to sign the letter in front of a notary public.

You will also need to bring a photo copy of your ID showing your immigration status (birth certificate, PR card, etc.) The notary will stamp the copy of your ID.
