Tips for travel consent letters

A travel consent letter is proof that a child has permission to travel outside of Canada.

Travel consent letters are not necessarily legally required to travel to and from Canada, however they are strongly recommended by Travel Canada.

Other countries may legally require a travel consent letter, and this is dependent on each country.

If your minor child is travelling alone, a border services agent will almost always insist on a notarized travel letter.

Travel consent letters should always include the child’s full legal name, date of birth and passport number.

Travel letters should have a clear statement, made by the parent or guardian, providing consent for travel.

Don’t forget to include the city and country that your child is travelling to.

It is a good idea to include the information for adult who is accompanying your child on the trip. This can include the adult’s full legal name and passport number.
